Microbrand Asterisk has introduced its latest mechanical release, the Happiness Is Fleeting, a jump hour automatic that blends illustrated dial art with a traditional mechanical complication. The watch is currently available through a live Kickstarter campaign.
Unlike conventional jump hour designs that lean minimal or vintage, this model centers on narrative artwork created in collaboration with comic artist Kerry Callen. The result is a graphic, character-driven dial that integrates timekeeping directly into the illustration.
A Story-Driven Jump Hour
The defining feature of the watch is its illustrated dial. The artwork depicts a stylized zombie holding a balloon, and the scene is not merely decorative. The hours are displayed through a jumping aperture, while the minutes are indicated by the zombie’s arm and balloon, making the illustration part of the functional layout.

This approach gives the watch a distinct identity within the jump hour category. Rather than isolating the complication visually, Asterisk builds the entire design around it. The display remains intuitive while offering a non-traditional presentation.
Case Details
The watch features a stainless steel case with proportions designed to remain wearable despite the bold dial. A sapphire crystal protects the artwork, while the overall construction reflects the brand’s typical microbrand positioning: modern finishing with accessible pricing.

The dial execution is central to the release. The illustrated scene uses layered elements to create depth, and the jumping hour window is positioned to integrate naturally into the artwork.
Mechanical Jump Hour Movement
Inside is the Seagull TY2709 automatic jump hour movement. As the minute display completes its rotation, the hour disc advances instantly in a traditional jumping fashion.

By pairing the complication with illustrated dial work, Asterisk distinguishes this release from more conservative interpretations of the format.
Pricing, Campaign & Availability
The Happiness Is Fleeting is priced at $239 (~€203 ) on Kickstarter, a 26% discount from the MSRP of $325.
The watch is limited to 999 pieces and includes a two-year warranty. Shipping is available worldwide, with estimated deliveries currently listed between May and July 2026 depending on pledge tier.
As with most Kickstarter projects, availability is tied to the campaign window and limited quantities within each tier. Backer numbers have already moved several tiers toward allocation limits.
