Formex Field Automatic Gen 2 – A Rugged Redesign

Formex Field Automatic Gen 2 – A Rugged Redesign

In 2022, Formex broke into the field watch segment with the launch of the original Field Automatic — a tool watch crafted in titanium, blending modern specs with military-inspired style. Now, the brand returns with a thoughtful evolution: the Formex Field Automatic Gen 2.

With a more compact 40mm case, reworked dial, and updated strap options, this second-generation release refines the concept without losing the rugged DNA that made the original a hit.

What’s New in the Gen 2?

The most immediate upgrade is the case. The Gen 2 comes in grade 2 titanium, now with a diameter of 40mm, a height of 10.6mm, and a lug-to-lug of 48mm — giving it a slimmer, more wearable profile. While the original was already lightweight and durable, Formex has gone a step further with a proprietary hardening process, increasing surface hardness from 145 Vickers to 900 Vickers. That makes it almost three times harder than standard grade 5 titanium.

The case features a fully sandblasted matte finish with precision-beveled edges for subtle detailing. It’s still rated to 150 meters of water resistance, equipped with a screw-down crown and sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.

A Redesigned Dial with New Colorways

Another standout change is the dial construction. The Gen 2 introduces a two-part dial with a sunburst-finished central section, surrounded by a chapter ring featuring cut-out stencil numerals. The result is a clean but dimensional layout that adds visual depth without cluttering the design.

There are three new color options:

  • Ice Blue – bright, refreshing, and ideal for summer
  • Coho Salmon – a bold, slightly copper-toned shade with blacked-out lume
  • Basalt Grey – a neutral, versatile option with BGW09 lume (white in daylight, blue at night)

The numerals and hands are treated with Super-LumiNova Grade A, and the date window at 6 o’clock is now bevelled and color-matched for a more integrated appearance.

Under the Hood: Proven Reliability

Inside the Gen 2 is the same movement as before: the Sellita SW200-1, a Swiss-made automatic calibre beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour. It’s a reliable, easy-to-service movement with a 38–41 hour power reserve and a solid track record across countless brands.

The watch retains its solid caseback, true to field watch roots, and avoids unnecessary display windows.

Strap Options & Comfort

As with most Formex models, strap customization is a key part of the experience. Buyers can choose between:

  • Nylon Velcro straps in black, blue, or khaki green
  • Bolgheri leather straps (black, brown, blue, violet) with a carbon fiber deployant clasp and tool-free micro-adjustment

Both strap types feature quick-release spring bars, so switching between rugged and refined is easy and tool-free.

Price & Availability

The Formex Field Automatic Gen 2 is now available for pre-order via Formex’s official site.

  • €850 with nylon Velcro strap
  • €990 with leather strap and carbon deployant clasp
  • Shipping begins late June 2025

Final Thoughts

The Field Automatic Gen 2 doesn’t reinvent the wheel — it refines it. With a cleaner profile, tougher finish, and more elegant dial architecture, this update builds on everything that made the original appealing while smoothing out the details.

It’s still a proper tool watch at heart, but now with more polish, more personality, and even better everyday wearability.

If you missed out on the first generation, this might be the right time to jump in.
