Finding a proper GMT with a genuine flieger design under a thousand euros is harder than it sounds. GMTs are everywhere. Pilot watches are everywhere. But the combination, done well at this price, is a much shorter list. That’s what makes the VIIS Flieger GMT 42 Levante worth a serious look.

First Impressions

Out of the box, the Levante feels clean and intentional. The design is straightforward, with a strong emphasis on clarity and usability.

Despite the flieger inspiration, the Levante has more personality than a traditional pilot watch. The orange accents, the color options, the transparent caseback. The result is a flieger that actually has some personality to it.

VIIS is a German microbrand with a focus on aviation-inspired design. The Levante is one of three variants in the Flieger GMT lineup, alongside the Velebit in black and the Adriatic in teal.

Design and Dial

The Levante runs with a white dial, which immediately sets it apart from most fliegers that default to black. Large Arabic numerals, high contrast, instantly legible. All the hallmarks of the format are there.

But VIIS doesn’t follow the Type B flieger template strictly. The minute and hour tracks swap places, with the minutes sitting on the inside rather than the outer ring. The orange accents add personality that a classic flieger would never allow. Around the outer edge, a 24-hour scale ties the whole thing into the GMT function.

The case is 316L stainless steel, brushed with polished accents, and it feels solid in the hand. The crystal is double-domed sapphire with an anti-reflective coating, and the AR coating is genuinely impressive here. Very few reflections, easy to read from almost any angle. Flip it over and a transparent caseback reveals the movement, which features Citizen’s Parashock shock protection. Water resistance is rated at 100 meters, making it more than capable for everyday wear.

The GMT Complication

This is where the Levante earns its price tag. The watch runs on the Miyota 9075 — a true GMT movement, meaning the local hour hand adjusts independently of the 24-hour hand. If you’re traveling or tracking another timezone, you’re not messing with the entire time setting to do it.

A lot of watches at this price point offer a GMT-style function that’s really just a fixed offset. The 9075 is a proper traveler’s complication.

The movement also offers a 42-hour power reserve, hacking seconds, and manual winding. Not a luxury caliber by any measure, but reliable and well-suited to the brief.

Wearability and Size

On paper: 42mm, 49mm lug-to-lug, just over 11mm thick. Before putting this on, the size was my biggest concern. A 42mm watch can easily feel overwhelming, and the proportions looked like they might push into that territory.

In practice, it wears better than expected. The slim profile, particularly for a GMT, does a lot of the heavy lifting, and the lug shape sits comfortably on the wrist. On a 17cm wrist it works well. That said, if your wrist is noticeably smaller than that, it’s worth keeping in mind before buying.

Strap Options

The Flieger GMT is available in six strap options, and I’ve been wearing the cognac leather, that you’ve seen throughout this review. It’s a solid strap, and the quick-release spring bars make swapping straightforward if you want to experiment.

On black leather it gets more serious and versatile, closer to a dress-casual watch than a pilot tool. The olive canvas pulls it in a more relaxed, vintage-military direction. The watch suits a wide range of strap styles and aesthetics, which adds a lot of flexibility to the package.

Price and Verdict

Now the important question: is it worth €649? The specs make a reasonable case: a true independent GMT movement, double-domed sapphire with solid AR coating, 316L steel case, and BGW9 lume. You’re not getting a bargain exactly, but you’re not overpaying either.

What tips it in the Levante’s favor is that the design holds up. It’s functional without being boring, and it has enough personality with the white dial, the orange detailing, the transparent caseback, to feel like a considered object rather than a spec sheet with a case around it.

If you want a pilot watch that does more than just tell the time, has some character without abandoning its flieger roots, and sits comfortably under a thousand euros, the VIIS Flieger GMT Levante deserves a place on your shortlist.
